WASHINGTON – Union Market is expanding beyond its carefully curated collection of artisan food products and diving into film.
The 45-acre destination in Northeast D.C. will open a film center for independent and alternative programming in 2015.
Plans for the Angelika Film Center — from Union Market developer EDENS in partnership with Reading International, Inc., — includes a multi-screen cinema and luxury seating.
Keeping in line with Union Market’s focus on food, Angelika also will feature a food and drink menu designed by former Food Network/Cooking Channel executive Bruce Seidel, along with Chef Santos Loo.
The new film center will be similar to the Angelika Mosaic, which opened in September 2012 in Fairfax County, Va. The original Angelika Film Center opened in New York City’s Soho district in 1989.
The announcement of the Union Market Angelika Film Center comes on the heels of another movie theater planned for Northeast D.C..
Last week, Landmark Theatres, the owner of E Street Cinema in downtown D.C. and Bethesda Row Cinema in Bethesda, Md., announced plans for a 10-screen movie theater in the District’s NoMa neighborhood at New York Avenue and N Street NE.
Plans for the Landmark theater also include luxury seats and a full bar.
